"Dark Turn of Mind" Song Analysis

"Dark Turn of Mind" by Gillian Welch - Lyrics and Video

In “Dark Turn of Mind”, Gillian Welch uses metaphors with diction and personification within a rhyme scheme to express how ones thoughts, actions, and interpretations can change their mindset. A use of enjambment also exemplifies her experiences and visuals of how the perspective of one’s self is different from one another’s.
Gilliam Welch carries how these thoughts can affect someone’s turn of mind through the techniques she chose. I appreciate the personification with feelings, such as, the shadows calling out to a lonely girl. A metaphorical example including personification from this song would be how a girl ‘bright as the morning’ is ‘full as the fruit on a vine’. A rhyme scheme is also visible throughout this song and provides flow with the words using the majority of end rhymes, with few internal rhymes. The connotation of 'dark' is not corresponding to the color, but the effect this color has creating mood.

Besides the example of a girl as bright as the morning, Welch comes back on this case to represent that she originally subjects a girl with a dark turn of mind, but it depends on where you come from and interpret life. The diction really is interpretable, especially in the line “and some girls are blessed with a dark turn of mind”. ‘Blessed’ brings up range for what it could mean and it seems to contradict on how Welch expresses the meaning of a girl with a dark turn of mind.
