Macbeth Big Ideas + Working Times

We discussed many big ideas of Macbeth such as, death, betrayal, friends, and superiority. One of the big ideas I really find the play most about would be the general idea of death. This main idea is really shown in many different scenes and if not, it was at least talked about. Death has been shown the scenes of the death of Duncan, the guards, Banquo, Lady Macduff and her son, and also Lady Macbeth. Most of them caused by killing from the power of Macbeth.

I'm sure we will be seeing more death, even Macbeth's, towards the finishing of the book. This is a main topic to stay focused on because of the importance of the people who die and the meaning behind why they killed them. It is even relevant to the fact that let up to people hating Macbeth even when they didn't know. I believe that death it's self isn't making a statement in the play, but the death shows betrayal and the action of power used against someone which I believe is a statement represented in the play.

Macbeth Quote

Macbeth pg. 17,19- Act 1: Scene 3
"First Witch-
All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Than of Glamis!
Second Witch-
All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Than of Cawdor!
Third Witch-
All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!

First Witch-
Lesser then Macbeth and greater.
Second Witch-
Not so happy, yet much happier.
Third Witch-
Thou salt get kings, though thou be none. So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo!"

In this passage in Macbeth, the witches make their famous appearances with Macbeth and Banquo. The scene takes place in a moment of confusion by Macbeth and Banquo. The witches first begin hailing to Macbeth and giving him titles such as, Than of Glamis and Thane of Cawdor when one already exists for each. After a while of thinking it through, Macbeth and Banquo begin to decipher the witches.

The witches know what comes in the future- Macbeth will be Thane of Glamis and Cawdor. By saying "shalt be king hereafter" was giving that Macbeth will be king, which he became later in Act 3. As the witches began talking about Banquo- they said that he would be less of what Macbeth would be, but greater. He might not have the titles or importance of Macbeth, but would be greater (possibly because of his death). Banquo wouldn't be that happy, but he would still be happier than Macbeth, implying that Macbeth will not carry on to be a happy man. The witches also said, Banquo would get kings, meaning have children to be kings, but he would not be one.

This passage sets the story for Macbeth and for what happens. When something happens in further scenes, we refer back to this scene of the witches. We still did not find out the bad things to happen in this scene, such as the death of Banquo we recently found out about. They also did not give the how to becoming Thane of Glamis, Cawdor, and being King, when Macbeth was questioning the how the whole time.

My Spring Break...

Well.. to start off, I didn't go to the beach which I was really depressed about. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I spent my time with family. On Monday and Tuesday I had to go to the dentist and got my face numb. For the rest of the week I had to catch up on my tv shows I follow (and by the way, I watched the best Grey's Anatomy i've seen). Then, I finally got up from home and did something fun and went to New orleans for Jazz Fest!

On Friday, my family had a crawfish boil at our house with our neighbors and family friends. It was a lot of fun I haven't had in a while! On Saturday, my Mom's side of the family came in to celebrate Easter a day early so the cousins in college could spend time with us. On Sunday, I had a very relaxed day which started at a family brunch with only four of us and ending with a tcby shake.(: After two long days at the dentists with a panic attack from the shot they had to give me, I finally got to relax. For three days I was pretty much bored all day but still relaxing. On Friday, I had so much fun at Jazz Fest with my friend and then the next morning had to wake up earlier than I did for school for my last volleyball tournament! Although our team didn't win, we still had fun and it was a great way to end the week.

Statements Referring to Macbeth & Work Times

Work Times:
Tuesday- 1 hour working on Nervous Condition Projects
Thursday- 1 hour working on Nervous Condition Projects
Friday- 1 hour working on Nervous Condition Projects
TOTAL: 3 hours

1. Ambition is a positive, desirable trait in a person.
In my opinion, I would agree that being ambitious is a positive trait for a person. But, in Macbeth, I take this into consideration of being positive at the moments he does everything for his desire to be king, yet it could not be positive at the moment were he wants to kill the heir to the King for his own power.

2. If you are in a position of power, you are happy.
I disagree with this statement. From my own experiences, I would have to say that with a position of power, you are not always happy. I used to be excited when I got to be in charge while babysitting, but later in the job, I'm stressed out and not wanting to take care of a bunch of little kids. In Macbeth, it should be coming up that he will be either happy or not if becoming King.

"Dark Turn of Mind" Song Analysis

"Dark Turn of Mind" by Gillian Welch - Lyrics and Video

In “Dark Turn of Mind”, Gillian Welch uses metaphors with diction and personification within a rhyme scheme to express how ones thoughts, actions, and interpretations can change their mindset. A use of enjambment also exemplifies her experiences and visuals of how the perspective of one’s self is different from one another’s.
Gilliam Welch carries how these thoughts can affect someone’s turn of mind through the techniques she chose. I appreciate the personification with feelings, such as, the shadows calling out to a lonely girl. A metaphorical example including personification from this song would be how a girl ‘bright as the morning’ is ‘full as the fruit on a vine’. A rhyme scheme is also visible throughout this song and provides flow with the words using the majority of end rhymes, with few internal rhymes. The connotation of 'dark' is not corresponding to the color, but the effect this color has creating mood.

Besides the example of a girl as bright as the morning, Welch comes back on this case to represent that she originally subjects a girl with a dark turn of mind, but it depends on where you come from and interpret life. The diction really is interpretable, especially in the line “and some girls are blessed with a dark turn of mind”. ‘Blessed’ brings up range for what it could mean and it seems to contradict on how Welch expresses the meaning of a girl with a dark turn of mind.

The Man. -By Camille Couvillion

The Man.

I remember the man that played guitar
The man I would sing with
the man I would spend holidays with
the man I would watch football games with
the man who always told me I was beautiful
the man I would draw pictures with

…the man who I miss more than anything.

My grandfather.

Now, he is the man I play guitar for
the man I sing for
the man I associate with good times
the man who made me enjoy football
the man I want to thank
the man I wish to draw one more picture for

…the man who I miss more than anything.

My grandfather.

Techniques:
  • Lyric- Elegy
  • Apostrophe? Talking about a dead person
  • Anaphora
  • End-stopped line. Just a complete phrase, not punctuation in the longer stanzas. Only having them to create emphasis on the single lines.
  • Stanzas- structure/pattern: 6 lines in one stanza, 2 single lines, 6 lines in one stanza, then 2 more single lines

Research Paper Rough Draft Reflection

I am very confident in my draft and how much work I put into it. From my detailed outline I had it all ready. The detailed outline took up a lot of time and that is where my whole paper came from. All I had to focus on was how to flow it all together. I am unsure if I have really gotten my point/thesis across, and I would like some feedback on that. I am really anxious to see what the feedback is and how much I will need to change.

I have my rough draft and I am ready for the feedback so I can start editing and revising to get the final result. Because of my confidence, I am worried I won't be as satisfied from the result I get back. After I receive these comments, I am going to visit the writing center to help them guide me with the questions I will have. I can't wait to see the final draft!

Sneaux Week Free Post

On Monday when we found out we didn't have school the next day, I was honestly a little excited. I got to see my friend I haven't seen in a while and that was fun. I started to work on my assignments and I started with Spanish.. We were assigned to make churros, that was an experience, but really fun! The next day, I went to a friend's house and we just layer around and watched movies (my favorite thing to do). Late that night I started to feel sick and it was hard for me to sleep. After that, it kind of explains my days off.

I was in bed for the next days off, sleeping and getting my assignments done. I was sick, but I still got to do the things I love the most and be lazy. Although there was a lot of whorl to do from home, I liked how it went knowing that I wasn't "missing school", but I was home and still getting everything I needed for school. Even though, it was good catching up on my rest, I'm glad to be back in the routine of things.

1-27-14 Post

Reading Times:
150 mins- Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
20 mins- I looked over my thesis detailed outline and began thinking of my final paper.

Informal- I've decided to focus on Gandhi as my research topic because I hear many great things about him. I've found many good sources that are reliable and help me to gather more information to better my research paper and thesis. He took on many responsibilities and led non-violence protests in order to gain India's Independence. I've learned a lot about what Gandhi has done in relation to our world and I would really like to keep learning about him further from my thesis paper research.

Formal- I became interested in the broad topic, Gandhi, from overhearing my Mother, seeing his quotes and insights, and remembrance of him. I began to notice a pattern in his movements towards Independence of India. He encouraged the way of passive resistance protesting, which eliminated violence. His practice led me to further look into his movements through non-violence and how it helped to achieve his goal for the Independence of India. Mahatma Gandhi took on responsibilities that led to freedom of all people, the Independence of India, and was in charge of many civil movements and protesting to reach these results that has made him memorable to the world today.

Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian- 90 mins.
Notecards- 30 mins.

Monday, January 13, 2014

Reading Times: 1/13/14

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian: 30 mins
Updating annotated bibliographies: 1 hour and 30 mins

Research Topic: Gandhi

It was a hard decision for what my research project could be on. After doing a lot of thinking under the topic of rights and responsibilities, I decided to do something different. Gandhi has always been popular for making references of how one can change the world. I figured there could be a lot behind him and his work to change the world.

This week, I am focusing on updating my annotated bibliographies. I have received feedback from my history teacher and plan to be changing a few of my articles. I need to practice on how to set up my research paper and add it to the outline of my notecards on Noodletools.

Student Generated Prompt

Chanler - What would happen in a world where it was the child's choice to go to school? Would you go to school?

I feel like many conflict would go about through everyone in the world. It depends that if we decided to go to school after we haven't learned any difference, I would assume no one would want to go to school. But, what conflicts do these cause? The world would not be at all what it is now without education. If I had the choice today, after doing this since a young age with no choice, I would stay in school because I personally really enjoy learning. Everyone will have a different approach on this question and it would be very interesting to compare the results.

If the choice was given to every student in this world, I'm sure more than half would choice to end. Coming from being a student myself, I understand where they would be coming from. We have already learned the basics. I believe that in a world where these choices could made, we would all be divided in half with the educated and non-educated. Who would work? Doing what? What would we learn? How could we live?
